In 1991 Michael Scicluna set up a company by the name of M & E Catering Ltd, in
order to open a coffee shop in St Paul's Bay, called "The Village Café". This was
very successful and had built a good clientele with both tourists and locals alike,
with clientele coming from all over Malta. The setting was plain and simple, clean
and not crowded. Most of the food preparation was home made. This is what it was
popular for. Perhaps the only catering establishment in all Malta which did not
serve french fries at all, but rather baked jacket potatoes with all the dishes
and also as a meal served with various filling.
The company went on to prepare some home bakes and started pre packing for distribution
to other outlets which proved to be a popular and an eventual success.
For this venture packaging and labelling was required. It was then that Mr. Scicluna
embarked on some ideas that were already used abroad and were perfect in presenting
the products in a professional way. The most important was the label
because it projected all the necessary information of the product.
Mr. Scicluna managed to set eyes on a Computer Labelling System by Planglow Ltd
from the UK at Hotel Olympia in London in 1992 and pursued to get the system going
for his goods.
This proved to be fruitful and attractive. Since the Labelling Act came into force
in Malta that year, Computer Labelling Systems was placed on the market, promoting
the labels under the same name.
This business became to be more lucrative and less labour intensive than the coffee
shop, so it was decided to improve on marketing the labelling products.
In the years that followed Computer Labelling Systems was established as the Pioneer
and Leader in the Retail and Manufacturing Industry, with Labels, Label Printers,
Price Markers, Data Collectors, Labelling Software, POS Solutions, EAS Systems and
business consumables.
